Old Standard Fried Chicken is another entry into the growing “Ben Poremba Dining District” North of Tower Grove, and it’s been polarizing since its opening. We have always enjoyed it but many have maligned it as over-priced, not having very good chicken, and being just a gimmick.

Admittedly it may not be the cheapest chicken in town, nor the best, but we’ve never had a bad experience and we love their chicken. It’s always been crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and full of wonderful flavor. Plus, we are addicted to their lemon yogurt sauce and hot sauce. Maybe it’s really the combination of those three things, the chicken, the yogurt sauce, and the hot sauce, that really have us hooked. Either way we serious dig the place in a major way. Plus their sides are super good, especially their creamed corn.

We’re also big fans of their drinks. They have an extensive bourbon list (not the most extensive in town, but still quite a selection) and you can have your drinks made with whichever bourbon you wish.

We’ve seen some major vitriol directed towards Old Standard by other foodies and chefs. We personally love it but everyone is welcome to their own opinion. The main thing we’ve seen others state is that the prices are too high for what you get. And we get that. Again, it’s not the cheapest chicken in town, nor the best, but we personally do not think something has to be the best or the cheapest to be a good meal. If you get the half-chicken with two sides you’ll have more than enough to get two people satisfied and you also get those incredible sauces to drizzle all over that delicious chicken.
