Veritas is another one of those diamonds in the rough that are scattered about the bleak dining scene of suburbia.  Plunked down into a stripmall near Chesterfield like a rose growing in the middle of a cornfield, this place is a new favorite of ours.

Devils on Horseback

Devils on Horseback

The interior is a mix of fine-dining and sports-bar, but the food is quite delightful.  Their “Devils on Horseback” rivaled any of the bacon-wrapped dates tapas I’ve had anywhere else in the city.  They use prunes instead of dates and the balsamic vinegar was plate-licking good.  Also, who can not like that presentation?  We really loved the scallops as well.  Very tender and flavorful.

Double Chocolate Martini

The drinks were pretty good too.  I thought my old fashioned was a little weak, but it was still a delight to drink.  The drink we really liked was their double chocolate martini, which used two different chocolate liqueurs instead of just Hershey’s syrup like I have caught several places, which shall  remain nameless, doing.

Pomme Frites

Pomme Frites

Even their snacky food was great.  Their Pomme Frites (french fries for the non-francophile) were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and came with a side of aioli.

Fettuccine with Mussels

Fettuccine with Mussels

The fettuccine with mussels we had was wonderful.  The mussels tasted pefect, the noodles were the right texture, and the sauce demanded some bread to sop it up.

Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned

Our only complaint was the service.  The waiters were plenty friendly, but no one came up to greet us when we walked in and left us waiting for sometime for service, and the waiter we got did not know very much at all about the food or drink.  Still, we had a great time and he tried his best.  I’ve looked online and found that others have complained about the same thing, but I wouldn’t let that stop you from coming here.  It’s still a wonderful place with a lot to offer on the St. Louis food scene.

  • Pros: Really strong menu with some truly delicious food and drinks.
  • Cons: Not the best wait staff, but they were friendly and we got everything we ordered.
  • Charlie’ Favorites:  Scallops, Devils on Horseback, Fettuccine with Mussels
  • Christine’s Favorites: Double Chocolate Martini, Pomme Frites, Fettuccine with Mussels
