If can be difficult to find a place to take a group of friends or family who all picky eaters with wildly different tastes.  The Central Table Food Hall tries to tackle that market by not only being a great New American style restaurant, but also a great sushi bar, a great pizza joint, and even a gelateria.

The interior is massive and wide open with the seating and different stations for preparing sushi, pizzas and the main plates all scattered about. The end impression is a little chaotic, but Central Table still manages to pull off a pleasant urban feel, especially with the hustle and bustle of the Central West End just outside its windows.

We ordered some cocktails and found out that Central Table mainly focuses on wine and beers.  They were able to make us an old fashioned and a Manhattan, but they were not that good really (though we did specifically ask for rye whiskey, which might not be something they selected well for).

We soon forgot about the drinks as we got to taste some of what Central Table has to offer food-wise.  This is one department in which they did not disappoint. For all of the variety the food has not suffered in quality.

We had the apple and delicata squash salad to start off with which was very flavorful and well plated, followed by the mussels, which were hearty and fresh and came with a wonderful sauce.  We then got some sushi which was as good if not better than any sushi bar I’ve been to in St. Louis.

We had the bread pudding for desert, which did not look like any bread pudding we’ve ever had.  It looked like a brownie.  This did not matter as it was simply wonderful to eat,  just so full of flavor with a really delicate texture.

We didn’t get to try any of the gelato or pizza on this visit, but I am sure we’ll get a chance again when we return, which we will.

  • Pros: Wide variety of well-prepared cuisines under one roof. Try the bread pudding!
  • Cons: Loud and wide open environment might not appeal to all.
  • Charlie’s Favorites:  Papisan, Spicy Scallop Roll, Mussels
  • Christine’s Favorites: Papisan, Apple and Delicata Squash Salad, Bread Pudding
